Free Stuff

Here’s the most popular page on the site, because hey - who doesn’t love free, right?
I thought it might be convenient to put everything I’m giving away right here on this page, to cut to the chase and allow you to get some free chapters, some short stories, even a long lost screenplay based on my first book, Resurrection Angel.

To download the documents, merely click on the link. They will open in a new window.
If you’re in a hurry, you can also merely Right Click on the link, then click on Save As and save the PDF file to your hard drive.

You’ll need Adobe’s Acrobat Reader to view and read the stories and chapters. If you don’t have it on your computer, you can download it here for free.

Enjoy!

The Novels

The First Five Chapters of Resurrection Angel - This is the book that started it all. Nominated for the Private Eye Writers of America SHAMUS Award for Best First Novel of the Year, it will introduce you to Denton Ward and Monty Crocetti; their life, their relationship, some of their past, their friends and one of their most unusual cases ever.

The Screenplay for Resurrection Angel - A million years ago, I had an agent who was sure that the quickest way for me to get rich and for him to also get rich was for me to write a screenplay based on Resurrection Angel. I guess he figured that if he couldn’t sell the book, maybe he could sell the script. Of course, in retrospect, it makes no sense at all to me now, but back then I bought into his craziness and wrote it. Hopefully you’ve already seen who I’d cast in the movie, now you can read the script.

The Book Club Guide for Resurrection Angel - Books clubs are not only cool and fun, they are a vitally important part of the marketing for my series. I love participating in discussions about the book(s) and love hearing other people’s opinion about Denton and Monty and their adventures. If you are part of a book club who are reading Resurrection Angel, and would love to have me come speak in person or have me call your club and surprise everyone, let me know. I can make that happen! Here’s the guide for discussion for some of the main points and themes in the book.

The Audiobook Podcast for Resurrection Angel - That’s right, an audiobook, read by yours truly. It’s free and comes in small bite size pieces. Kinda like chocolate, only different. Go to this page to download all the episodes you’ve missed, then subscribe to my RSS feed below (either through your feed reader or in your email Inbox) to get them delivered to you every time a new episode is posted. The entire book, on audio, for free. Eventually.

The First Five Chapters of Everlasting Life - This is the second book in the series. It picks up pretty close to where Resurrection Angel left off, and the action happens fast and furious from page one. This book is a bit shorter, moves faster and is a lot darker and more violent than Resurrection Angel. It’s sold twice as much as Resurrection Angel, so I must have done something right. Download the chapters, print them out and see if all those other readers were right about it being even better than the first book.

The Short Stories and Essays

Here are some short stories and essays that I have done over the years. Some successful, some not so. But they are a part of who I am as a writer, and having recently rediscovered the craft, are going to be a bigger part of my future as a writer.

I hope you enjoy them.

“Super Heroes” - I wrote this short story while a student; it ended up winning the San Francisco Bay Guardian’s Fiction Contest that year. A succinct, honest story about two people with AIDS and the rapproachment that settles between them…

“Stealing Fire From The Gods” - The story I submitted to the Guardian contest the next year, dealing with the homeless, the power struggle between the individuals in the community and how art and literacy can set one free…

“Essay: St Petersburg Times - This is the essay that almost got me kicked out of the Air Force. Who knew everything you wrote for publication had to be approved by the government? A small version of war and peace…
